100% Vegan
My Ethical Purchase Policy
I create using vegan products because I don’t believe that animals are commodities: not for food, not for clothing, not for cosmetics, and not for art.Â
You might be surprised to learn that the following supplies commonly contain animal products:
- Black paint: bone char
- Paper and canvas: rabbit skin
- Brushes: hair of squirrel, goat, horse or ferret
- Gesso: gelatin or rabbit skin
- Watercolor: ox gall or squid ink
- Oil paints and crayons: beeswax
- Red paint and India ink: beetles
- Tempera paint: egg whites
- Graphite pencil: cow or sheep fat (tallow)Â
- Fixative: cow casein Â
Â
These ingredients are “traditional” because they existed before science was able to engineer alternatives.
Today, ethical alternatives to these products are readily available, and they perform better. One paint engineer explains that the densities and impurities of bones make it too inconsistent. He instead uses acetylene which is made from a chemical reaction.Â
My supplies are always vegan resulting in a 100 percent vegan artwork for your space.Â
